Happy and Proud

I would guess that most remember when they came out, who they told first, and I’d also guess that those you spoke to first also remember that. I recently received a post on social media. It said, simply, “I am gay.”

Mosquito Season

Dear Dr. Eva,

The mosquito season is already exploding in my back yard. After a couple of hours of gardening, my wrists and ankles have so many bites they are swollen. I put on mosquito repellent, but is there anything else I can do? I’m thinking of hiring a mosquito spraying service, but I wonder if the spray is dangerous and also won’t it interfere with the ecosystem?

Fill Your Cup

We’ve all heard the saying, “You can’t give from an empty cup.” And to be honest, it used to drive me crazy. I never understood the concept of taking care of yourself, so that you can give your best effort in everything you do. Unfortunately, for most of the population, this concept is non-existent. Most of us juggle many responsibilities and aren’t taking care of ourselves – physically, mentally, or emotionally. Having experienced total depletion on all three of these, I want to give you my top-five tips for making sure I’m taking care of my needs every day. I didn’t understand the importance of these until I could no longer be of service to my family, job, and especially to myself.

I recently learned a new acronym: “LAT,” or “Living Apart Together.” It reminded me of a quote from Katherine Hepburn: “Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.” Setting aside the gender reference, what does this trend to be in an intimate relationship but not living together say to us in this culture? How acceptable is it? How widespread is it in all age groups and minority populations? There is not much research on these questions.

Pride in a Changing Climate

It’s easy to show our LGBT pride when we are in a crowd of people who are all doing the same. That’s why some people are out only during Pride: it feels safe. It’s also much easier to feel and show gay pride when things are moving in the right direction, as they had been in the last few years. The Supreme Court affirmed the legitimacy of same-sex marriages, there were steps towards equal rights for transpeople, and barriers to LGBT participation in the military and other institutions were coming down.

Is your identity and personal information safe from individuals who might use it to cause serious, lasting damage to your finances, credit, and good name? The answers will be available at the LGBT Resource Center of Chase Brexton Health Care’s next “Lunch and Learn,” offered in partnership with the Baltimore branch of AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). The event is set for Thursday, June 8th from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the community rooms at Chase Brexton’s Mount Vernon Center (1111 North Charles Street, Baltimore).
