Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to Cathy Brennan’s column “When will we be wed?” (Ladybug’s Political Smackdown, January 27). While Ms. Brennan wrote what might be an almost convincing editorial on why we should be looking at civil unions as opposed to full marriage rights, there were several flaws in her arguments.
We, the LGBT community, have achieved a great deal in the past few years. A few states granted us the right to marry and our military personnel are no longer forced to hide their sexual orientation. We seem closer to social equality. Unfortunately, complete social equality is an illusion at this time. An encounter I had with a supposed medical professional will serve to illustrate my point.
We are here to serve you. Recently I received some criticism of an article I wrote on a Facebook group with 183 members. Only six people joined the conversation. That is not a very effective way to get one’s opinion heard. There is a better way. If you like or dislike what we are doing you can reach thousands of readers by simply writing a letter to the editor.
Concerning OUTloud's coverage of Mortville and Occupy Baltimore, these protesting individuals do not represent 99% of Americans – perhaps 9%. I can understand Mortville’s calls for ENDA, an end to discrimination against LGBT persons, and the like.
As one of the SlutWalk Baltimore (SWB) organizers—one chapter of the worldwide movement to end victim-blaming of sexual assault survivors—I must respond to Cathy Brennan’s piece in Baltimore OUTLoud’s October 7th issue. Brennan’s rape comparison, suggestion that empowering women has no place in the anti-violence movement, and insensitivity to the original SlutWalkToronto organizers’ survivor status (suggesting they organized SlutWalk to sell merchandise) seems straight out of a men's magazine, not a safe space like Baltimore OUTLoud.
