Baltimore OUTloud’s coverage of the Trayvon Martin case (April 6, 2012) was strongly oriented toward symbolic responses of various identity-political players – HRC, NGLTF, NOW. All those groups’ sentiments about the boy’s tragic killing were reasonable and well-intentioned, but they also felt boilerplate and pro forma. There’s a bigger reality, I think, missing from the discussion.
Women embody a special ability to bring forth life. Possessing the Divine Gift to cultivate seeds internally and externally with gentle yet aggressive force cannot be matched. During Women History Month we must take time to educate those around us about the wondrous contributions women have bestowed upon us.
Our opposition didn't waste any time in collecting signatures. When the marriage bill passed the MD Senate, the opposition filed paperwork to begin the referendum process the next day. By the time the Governor signed the bill on March 1, the signature collecting began. So did the battle for hearts and minds.
I have sat here and I’ve waited. I cannot say that wait has been with “baited breathe” so to speak, but I knew it would come. Maybe I knew the moment would strike after Miller announced the “green” vote for the Civil Marriage and Religious Freedom Act”. Us gay folk…we knew what was coming, right? If we could just get past that darn House of Delegates. Though we cheered, kissed, and embraced our partner or the nearest person we could manage to find. We knew of the pink elephant in the room. When we went to the Stable or to Sappho’s to toast the victory, that elephant came with us, didn’t she? She was an ugly, decrepit thing who sat there with the word “Referendum” written across her belly.
As Black History month 2012 draws to a close we must always remember to honor those that have gone before us. A people without knowledge of their past are a people who face an uncertain future. Living your truth with integrity, humbleness and a spirit of assuredness will place you in the long line of pioneers.
