Security Updates

Offers you can’t refuse

Can this computer get any slower?! If you haven’t heard, there were two flaws recently discovered in computing chips made by Intel that allow hackers access to your computer. The chip flaws affect PC computers, as well as Android smartphones and tablets, along with Mac computers, iPhones and iPads. Mac users were probably as shocked as I was that Apple products, generally considered virtually impossible to hack, were also vulnerable. All this has sent the tech world into a tailspin rushing to create fixes.

Cutting the TV Cord

Considering cutting the TV cord? These days, more and more people are cutting the cord, as cable TV, satellite TV and even FiOS TV are becoming more and more expensive. Even the cover story for a recent Consumer Reports looked at the issue.

Remember the days when everything was paper and you had file cabinets to organize all that paper, or it was in boxes with no organization? Today we likely have those same disorganized drives on our electronic devices. With all these electronic documents, I find having a good organizational system for them is essential. Not only does it make it easier to find things, but it helps reduce recreating things because you cannot find them.

The internet saw a massive ransomware attack on May 12th, when computers in nearly 100 countries were hit and held hostage to hackers. The hackers demanded those affected pay a ransom to have their files and systems released. The attack hit medical networks and government agencies especially hard, as they are more vulnerable since they tend to upgrade their systems less frequently than businesses. It’s all a reminder of how important it is to safeguard your computer’s security.

Connecting with Routers

We live in a connected society, and expect everything to be networked and connected to the internet. Connecting requires a modem, and today most internet providers provide you with a combination modem and router. They usually have four ethernet ports, and tend to include wireless access.
