Not yesterday’s epidemic: Baltimore’s infection rate is 7.5 times the U.S. average

The 2017 AIDS Walk & Run Baltimore, presented by Quest Diagnostics, is set for the Maryland Zoo on Sunday, May 7th, with the goal of raising $150,000 for Chase Brexton Health Care, to further expand its HIV testing, awareness, and care programs.

Baltimore’s rate of infection is 7.5 times higher than the national average, and the third highest rate of HIV diagnosis in the U.S., according to the CDC. HIV/AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death in the city of Baltimore, but at least one in six residents has not been tested for HIV. Baltimore City alone accounts for 41% of all new cases in Maryland. One in every five new HIV cases is an individual 13 to 24 years old.

The Equality March for Unity and Pride in Washington, D.C., is set for Sunday, June 11th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aids Action Baltimore (AAB), is planning to engage buses for D.C. to make it easier for Baltimoreans to join the demo. Their buses will depart from AAB at 8:30 a.m. and will leave Washington at 7:30 p.m.

Ride for the Feast Updates

As the Ride for the Feast approaches on May 13th and 14th, here is the last round of events planned to support teams raising funds for the event. On April 29th, Spokin’ Hot, Team Epic, and Fierce Chicks Rock will join together to host their second annual Scavenger Hunt Alley Cat – 2 to 7 p.m., at 1725 Maryland Avenue, Baltimore.

PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Howard County hosts a gala fundraiser, Thursday, May 11th, 2017, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. It’s at the Historic Oakland Manor (5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, Maryland), and includes free parking. The event will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine, their signature cocktail, raffles, a silent auction, and a drag show. The event dress code is “tuxedo to fig leaf.”

Late last month, the Human Rights Campaign designated Chase Brexton Health Care as a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality,” making it one of only three health-care providers in Maryland, and one of only 302 nationwide, to receive such recognition. The honor was bestowed by the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization. The designation was reported in the tenth edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI).
