Conversely, Gay Inc responded by asking folks to donate to them and various orgs touting their agenda. So-called LGBT groups made some cash that day with a "combo for equality" sales pitch. Although effective and catchy, we, as a community, failed to see what this dust up is really about.
I don't care that chicken box CEO doesn't believe in "gay marriage". I do care that he and his fast food restaurant fund hate groups that advocate reparative therapy and the annihilation of gays and lesbians. I do care that every dollar that is spent at hater chicken box fast food goes to disseminating messages that gays and lesbians are unworthy to enjoy life and yes, unworthy to even live. This unbridled propagation of hatred is what this madness is about.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has noted that one of the beneficiaries of Hater Chicken's funds is a known hate group. The Family Research Council propagates junk science promoting reparative therapy (pray away the gay) and its leadership has declared that gays and lesbians really should be relegated out of existence. This all sounds quite extremists but when coupled with millions coming from Hater Chicken and fundamentalist religious groups, we can see how this adds up to a major issue. Would the American public line up at Hater Chicken if they openly supported racial segregation, the KKK or skinheads? Would people line up to support an enterprise that celebrated Nazi philosophy? Of course not...but people lined up to buy fast food from an enterprise funding folks calling for the death of the gays....
We must see this for what it is. Hater Chicken and its affiliates are in the business of funding and fueling hate. This is not about marriage. This is about funding programs promoting annihilation. Shame on Gay Inc for not calling a spade a spade! And I'm not going to buy a darn thing from JC Penny or Starbucks because they are rainbow friendly. I doubt giving them a dollar will get a gay homeless kid off the street or a young transwomen off the stroll. Do you think by buying kitchen towels from JC Penny will make young lesbians in Texas, New Jersey or Maryland any safer from the homophobes' murderous rage? I doubt it. Is our dignity so cheap that we can buy our freedom from a purchase from Starbucks? In my Spike Lee voice, "WAKE UP!"
Send your hard-earned rainbow dollars to local groups that actually serve LGBT communities. We must build viable institutions that support our lives and advocate for better whole lives for our communities (not just one facet of our lives). Our lesson here is we must love ourselves. We must advocate for ourselves. We must realize our liberation is not a commodity to be sold.
