CarnEVIL• Non-Profit Gives Scares for a Cause

Written by  Brynn Devereaux

A new Halloween experience has taken over Columbia. CarnEVIL tells the story of Mr. Archibald Evil, an amusement park owner who died suddenly 100 years ago. The performers and animals of his park disappeared into the woods and have come back to perform again. Mutant sideshow freaks, demented clowns, and escaped circus animals will terrify even the bravest of souls.

CarnEVIL is produced by Disaster Preparedness DC, a non-profit dedicated to reduces disaster related loss of life and human suffering by directly supporting first responders’ training and equipment needs. Founded in 2015, the charity addresses catastrophe preparedness through public advocacy and provides immediate support to local public safety agencies during emergency disaster responses. Disaster Preparedness DC hosts one largescale fundraiser per year, and this year, they decided to host a Halloween festival.

“Just look at the news any given week. You’ve got terrorism, hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes,” says Gene Ryan, Maryland resident, firefighter, and founder of Disaster Preparedness DC. “We first responders see real-life horror on a regular basis, so it’s really cathartic for us to scare people in a fun, safe environment.”

On select nights through November 5th, thrill seekers walk through haunted woods and enjoy a VIP tent, fair food, cocktails, and a menacing midway with creepier versions of some of your favorite games. “It’s a total hoot watching people scare each other and having such a great time. And to be able to do that while we’re raising money for this great non-profit is just the icing on the cake,” says Ryan.
