A Radical Welcome for Open Enemies

"Both sides are unwilling to budge," says a delegate in the MD General Assembly regarding the marriage debate. The delegate says she has heard from the pros and cons of same sex marriage legislation. Although she has heard more from folks who oppose the bill, she noted that both sides seem unwilling to entertain any compromise.

A Sister's Anguish

The invisibility of women in our movement

There has been a lot of buzz this week in regard to women's issues. The Washington Post published a story about how Black women viewed themselves. A letter from a Black woman to the Black Church made its way around the internet regarding the institution's misogyny. Then the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade made headlines. I find it curious that when many of us talk about women's issues, it really is only in the context of reproductive rights and not comprehensive human rights.

A Bigot's Bigot

GOP scrambles to find its own "Archie Bunker"

While watching the Republican presidential debates, I think about Archie Bunker, the laughable bigot featured in the 80's sitcom "All in the Family". I marvel at the GOP presidential candidates. The Republican field is littered with malcontents, adulterers, conspiracy theorists, racists, homophobes and of course, pizza sales people. All of these folks have some sort of political acumen, which has helped them ascend to their respective positions in the party. The one thing that seems to draw them together is their disdain for gay folks and at some level, their prejudice against people of color and immigrants. I am very surprised how the GOP moderates have allowed their party to be taken over by Christian evangelical bigots.
