The 38th annual Pride festivities in Baltimore on June 15-16 should feature a bit more hop in the steps of the paraders, a few more wide smiles among the folks around the festival’s booths, and a general feeling of accomplishment by the thousands who are expected to attend. For this Pride marks the first time that same-sex couples can legally marry in Maryland.
June is upon us and that means it must be Pride Month. We certainly have a lot to be proud of in Maryland this year, and this three-day Charm City LGBT Film Festival (plus a special kickoff event) at the Creative Alliance is the way to get things started.
The path to ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (E.R.A.) currently has two strategies, the Three State Strategy and the Start Over Strategy, being played out in the feminist community and in Washington D.C. The Three State Strategy has had a renewed and enhanced push recently and seems to be gaining momentum among even those feminists who have steered away from it in the past. Simply put, the Three State Strategy requires Congress to pass legislation eliminating the previously imposed ratification deadline which would then allow only three more states to ratify the E.R.A.
The University of Maryland Baltimore’s Star Track program and the Gay Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore (GLCCB) will again collaborate this year to host the 2013 Baltimore Gay Pride Project Health Youth Zone.
This issue of Baltimore OUTloud a milestone for us as we celebrate 10 years of activist journalism in service to Baltimore’s sexual-minority communities. In our first issue on May 16, 2003, founding publisher Mike Chase described the launch of the paper as time-consuming, nerve-wracking, and exciting – the beginning of an adventure. It has indeed been all of these with ups, downs, triumphs and tragedies, successes to celebrate and obstacles to overcome. Yet, despite the economic crisis of the last five years and the demise of much of the print media, here we are, ten years and counting! Our success against the odds and conventional wisdom, rest squarely with our superb staff, loyal columnist and writers – volunteers all, committed advertisers, and most importantly you, Baltimore’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
The Baltimore Sun reporting that with same-sex marriage now available, Maryland state employees in same-sex relationships have been notified that they won’t be able to include domestic partners in their health insurance as of January 1, 2014. With 11 states, the District of Columbia, and three Native American tribes having legalized same-sex marriage, employers that have domestic-partner benefits are increasingly reexamining their policies in that area.
